Eye Diabetes

Some people like eye candy. Having an organized good looking work environment is nice. But how much do you really care about windows being animated and blurring and whizzing by? Do we care that 95 percent of the computer work is done just to provide entertainment to someone?

When I am working off battery, I want every last morsel of power to go into making sure my work is saved and shared properly. I am not willing to carry a larger battery just to have silly animations.

Any graphical trickery that does not help the user can be considered too much eye candy, and can be poisonous to the user.

Grammatically, this would still be Eye Candy, so it’s more of a contraction: [Too much ]Eye [Candy that causes] Diabetes.

I’m trying to communicate that there is a sickness involved with wasting computer cycles on delaying the user.

On android One can enable developer mode and turn animations off.

In windows, one can turn of transparency effects, show drag bars, and turn off animations.

In KDE Plasma, one can turn off individual effects and turn off the compositor, and set animations to instant.

Some features are very useful, such as an indication that an application is starting (KDE has a bouncing logo next to the cursor), Showing the contents of windows while they are being dragged is very useful. Having nice anti-aliased fonts is helpful.

Sometimes an animation gives a clue to the user how to re-open a window that was shrunk to the taskbar. If the taskbar is clearly enough labeled, that is not needed.
